Industrial Battery Systems and Integration Engineer

 

Position Overview

Houston employer,  a leader in advanced battery solutions for industrial applications, is offering an adventure tailor-made for an experienced, hands-on, Intelligent Power Systems Engineer for our next generation battery products and platforms serving Subsea Vehicles, Subsea Oil & Gas Infrastructure, MWD/LWD, PIG and other applications. 

Their batteries are highly configurable based on customer use case.   These leading edge “mechatronics-class” systems involve the integration of uP based electronics, embedded firmware, GUI, battery cells, wire harnesses and communications in ruggedized mechanical enclosures exposed to harsh environments.  The systems may involve high power and high current.  The successful candidate will be able to blend all these elements together as a holistic system throughout all aspects of the design process:  Architecture concepts, detailed requirements, design, V&V, release to production and quality of customer experience.

  

The position also requires support of post-production root-cause-analysis (RCA) teams at the system level and the ability to work in an environment with strong cross-organizational team dynamics.

The systems engineer reports to the Director of R&D.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Learn and understand customer use cases and performance/operating profiles for battery energy across subsea, downhole and other industrial applications.

  • Develop and document system level requirements

  • Support the customer quoting process

  • Investigate multidiscipline “mechatronics” architectural options covering electronics, software, communications and mechanical enclosure.   Recommend alternatives with tradeoffs of strengths and vulnerabilities that will achieve system level results

  • Design platforms to enable product variants and manage key interfaces enabling reuse, ease of integration, configurability and other best practices

  • Ensure the system can meet manufacturability, test, temperature, pressure (PSI) and cost requirements.

  • Create and maintain System level FMEA and uses it as a tool for risk assessment throughout the product life cycle

  • Create system level V&V requirements and plan V&V activity on risk based priorities. Able to define proper progression of V&V activity through component, subsystem and system level modeling, simulation and testing activities

  • Identify critical enabling technologies and perform activities to improve readiness level for implementation in product

  • Use system modeling, simulation and analysis tools and techniques to accelerate product development process. Model the system, integrate the system, run the system, assess system performance.  (Familiarity with simulation tools such as Matlab)

  • Design system level tests for validation and production to provide appropriate coverage

  • Ensure the system is resilient against ESD and EMI

  • Work with manufacturing team by assisting them with independent validation of the product and smooth transition to production. This includes providing expert input to automated manufacturing testing, calibration and configuration processes

  • Support customer side activities during prototype and early production phases such as FAI, UAT and Field testing

  • Document system implementation details in the product design specifications working with electronics, software, manufacturing and applications leads. 

  • Create system level product/customer documentation

  • Keep abreast of industry trends, technologies and best practices

  • Support  Product Development Process which is administered in our ARAS PLM system​

 

Key Skills, Qualifications, Education and Experience

  • Education:  BSEE, MSEE preferred or Systems Engineering

  • 7-10 years in embedded electronics systems engineering, systems architecture, systems platforms and systems partitioning for efficient reuse and integration across integrated uP based electronics, embedded software, communications, electrical systems and mechanical enclosures.   Knowledge of batteries as another power source is a plus but we expect to train for this.

  • Proficient in communications standards such as such as CAN, USB, RS485 or equivalent

  • Able to model and simulate systems in Matlab or equivalent.  Experience with SPICE circuit simulations for power systems is highly desirable. Experience with battery system simulation would be a plus.

  • Experience with high voltage and high power electronics design and integration into intelligent power systems is highly desirable

  • Has worked in a phase-gate product discovery, product development and product delivery project environment.  Prior use of a PLM system (Product Lifecycle Management) is highly desirable.

  • High proficiency in system level FMEA and DfXs. Familiarity with common electrical and electronics system failure modes is expected.

  • Excellent system level characterizer and debugger

  • The following technical background is highly desirable:

  • Systems knowledge in one or more of the following applications:  Subsea vehicles, subsea oil and gas infrastructure, MWD/LWD tools, high power energy systems.

  • Altium eCAD and Solidworks or ProE mCAD is highly desirable.

  • Project management skill including MS project

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Excellent analytical ability that can simplify the complex

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills required to build relationships with team members, sales staff, manufacturing staff and customers.  Experienced in customer dialog to understand wants, needs and pain points

  • Excellent oral and technical writing skills

  • Self-motivated and self-managed

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced atmosphere with a high level of accountability
